Welcome to IABC @ UGA

IABC @ UGA is a student chapter of the International Association of Business Communicators. We are affiliated with the IABC/Atlanta professional chapter. Our focus is to connect students at UGA with professionals working in fields relating to business communications. Students of all majors are welcome to attend meetings, become members, and will undoubtedly benefit from involvement with our chapter.

We are the Student Chapter of the Year!

Well, as the semester is winding down (or up for some people) we received a bit of good news from IABC  –  we have been chosen as the student chapter of the year!  Thanks to everyone who supported us throughout the year.  It’s been great meeting everybody.

We should have news soon on our executive board for 2012-2013.  Keep watching our Twitter page for updates.

IABC Executive Board Applications

Are you interested in gaining professional leadership experience and having the opportunity to network with top communicators?
The International Association of Business Communicators at UGA is looking for enthusiastic, talented, and hard working students for next year’s executive board. All majors are welcome to apply!
To apply please submit a resume and cover letter to iabcatuga@gmail.com no later than 11:59 pm on Friday, April 20. In your cover letter please include what position(s) you are applying for and how you will fulfill that position(s). Each applicant will have a short 10-15 minute interview during the week of April 23-27.

Life Beyond the Hedges

Each semester, graduation gets a little closer. But what comes after that?
Life Beyond the Hedges, an anual event hosted by IABC at UGA, explores the art of surviving after graduation. The event is open to students of all majors and levels.

Life Beyond the Hedges will be on March 26 in the Tate Reception Hall.

There will be four sessions throughout the day, and each counts as an individual Blue Card Event!

Tuesday: Misty Skedgell from Turner Broadcasting


This Tuesday, March 6 Misty Skedgell, vice president of corporate communications from Turner Broadcasting will be joining us.

As vice president of corporate communications for Turner Broadcasting System, Inc., Skedgell serves as Turner’s chief spokesperson and directs all internal and external corporate communications. She is a graduate of the University of Georgia with a degree in journalism, and has worked at CNN and Turner in various positions since then.

Tuesday: Jennifer Hudson from Edelman

Do you love PR?  Then make sure you are at our next meeting Tuesday February 21 at 6:30. We will have guest speaker Jennifer Hudson from Edelman.

Jennifer is an account supervisor at Edelman, leading account execution for corporate and business-to-business clients.  She currently is focussing on building influencer and media relations, executive visibility, branding and general corporate communications.  If you are at all interested in PR, do not miss this meeting!

Meeting Update: Cancelled

Unfortunately, tonight’s IABC meeting with speaker Nancy Bistritz of NURUN has been cancelled due to a medical emergency. We wish Ms. Bistritz well and hope to reschedule her talk at a later date.
Please join us next Tuesday, Feb. 7 for our guest speaker Sandy Mayfield from Habitat for Humanity!

Nancy Bistritz on Marketing and Communication

Welcome back IABC members.  We hope you are enjoying your spring schedule.

CANCELED – No Meeting Tuesday (tomorrow)

We’re sorry if you were looking forward to getting to hear from professional writing coach Marcia Riley tomorrow, but due to unforeseen circumstances, we have canceled tomorrow’s speaker meeting.  Our next speaker meeting is now planned for after Winter Break in January, and we will post more details on it in the coming weeks.

We still plan on holding Dogs on the Lawn this Wednesday from 10-2pm, so please stop by.  Again we apologize for this inconvenience.

Dogs on the Lawn: Petzone and IABC This Wednesday

Do you love dogs?  Take a break from studying this Wednesday and stop by the Tate lawn, where IABC at UGA and Petzone will be promoting awareness for some of the dogs at the shelter.  Stop by to play with the dogs or just to ask about our big plans for next semester.
